After a year spent using UpSmart, sixth-grade students at Cross Middle School in Tucson, Arizona outperformed their peers by 44% on the NWEA® MAP® Growth™ math assessment. In addition to increasing standards mastery among students, UpSmart was also found to help make teaching more efficient and instruction more accessible, and to “support the development of productive struggle through rigorous tasks.”
Students begin by completing a quick screener assessment (5–10 minutes) for each topic to pinpoint their skill level for that specific topic, and to determine if they need more review and support for the skills they’ve worked on in class or are ready for deeper learning.
Each level features a highly adaptive set of tasks to assess students’ mastery of skills and trigger appropriate scaffolds and instruction. Students participate in technology-enhanced tasks including drag and drop, graphing points and lines, creating data displays, identifying text and images in “hot spot” tasks, and writing constructed responses.
UpSmart continuously accumulates data about each student’s understanding and adapts the difficulty of tasks and instruction as well as the amount of practice accordingly.
When a student struggles with a topic, UpSmart provides a number of scaffolds to help them complete the task and develop a deeper understanding at exactly the moment they need the help.
UpSmart offers continuous access to data and metrics to help teachers and administrators answer these important questions:
UpSmart also has program assessments to provide educators with a tool to track student growth over time. These periodic assessments can be assigned to students up to three times throughout the school year to assess overall mastery of grade-level standards. The reporting dashboard tracks overall growth as well as growth within each domain, giving educators the data they need to assess the effectiveness of their classroom instruction and students’ readiness for high-stakes tests. Teachers can also dive deeper into the data to discover skills and item types that students may be struggling with to inform upcoming teaching and remediation.
UpSmart is also highly customizable to align to a classroom’s scope and sequence. Teachers can assign topics to students in conjunction with their classroom lessons, prioritize and reorder topics as needed, or allow students to complete topics in the order they prefer.
