Scaffolds and Supports

Our courses include a number of tools and resources designed to support students’ varied learning styles and unique needs:

  • Embedded tools provide read-aloud support, transcripts and captions, definitions, and highlighting to help students access and organize content.
  • The eNotes tool enables students to synthesize information and record questions and observations in a digital notebook.
  • Educators can customize courses to remove or reorder content, create new writing prompts and projects, and customize assessment settings for test time completion, passing threshold, and more.

In order to be successful, it is crucial that English language learners can access and understand course content. We’ve incorporated several evidence-based practices and instructional strategies into our courses to help English language learners achieve success.

Active reading

Our CloseReader tool supports the active reading of complex texts, with embedded comprehension questions, text and audio prompts, and contextual definitions of new vocabulary words. Transcripts and video captions allow students to follow along with the on-screen teacher as they deliver direct instruction, ground concepts in relevant real-world applications, teach comprehension strategies, and offer clear and concise explanations of subject matter.

Students can receive support in their home language. Throughout Edgenuity’s® courses, students can translate text into over 60 languages, including Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Filipino, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Thai, or Vietnamese. Additionally, students can hear text read aloud in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Vocabulary development

In each lesson, students are explicitly taught academic and content-area vocabulary words. Through direct instruction and practice, students learn how to apply these words in new contexts. Students also have access to an embedded glossary tool, which allows them to review words introduced in each lesson and look up new words.

Support for Exceptional Learners

Edgenuity courses include scaffolds, accommodations, and modifications to ensure all learners including students who have an IEP or 504 plan, or are homebound due to illness can successfully access and complete their courses.

Evidence-based instructional strategies

Edgenuity’s courses feature videos of expert, on-screen teachers who deliver direct instruction, orient students to the lesson’s goals, ground concepts in relevant real-world applications, and offer clear and concise explanations of subject matter. Edgenuity’s on-screen teachers model learning strategies and explicitly teach students a wide variety of learning strategies such as self-monitoring, self-evaluation, goal setting, questioning, and self-explanation. Students engage in learning activities that address multiple learning modalities. This includes viewing direct instruction videos; exploring interactive simulations, manipulatives, and labs; writing online; and more.

SPED Case Managers

Edgenuity Instructional Services Case Managers provide an additional layer of support to students, teachers, and schools who want to offer online courses to students who have an IEP, 504 Plan, or are homebound. Case Managers assist with everything from intake to course customization to monitoring and reviewing performance and providing input on how IEPs may need to change. Case Managers work directly with Edgenuity’s virtual instructors, ESE teachers, and school districts to ensure your students’ needs are being met.
